Over the top

Well, it finally went over the top of the spillway. Before the water was just lapping over but today it is flowing over the edge. It's official history, never before happened since the dam was built in 1954. We also went out to Spiritwood Lake to check out the cabin even though the road is still under water they are letting you drive over it. The water is very high. I think it was almost this high when Mom and Dad first bought the cabin.

Only other thing of note is that we are moving things around and out of the basement so we can get drain tile put down. Quite a lot of work and expense but hopefully will be well worth the effort. Will hopefully be able to talk to the guy today and set up a time.

Yesterday we had snow and rain and today is mostly cloudy and only around 40 degrees but we are going to take a load out to the landfill to we can get the garage cleared out. A water problem is always a good time for doing a much needed spring cleaning.

Newsworthy Items

Yesterday was 82 degrees out and this morning it was snowing and only got to a high of around 40. Only in North Dakota can you have such extremes in weather. Of course the snow melted as fast as it fell but none the less it was there, floating down from above.
Another noteworthy item is that water went over the "glory hole". First time since the dam was built in 1959 that water has entered it. It truly is a wonder why all this flooding is happening. I mean, in 50 years this has never happened and we have had many winters that have dumped alot of snow. Oh well, what will be will be.

Earth Day

I felt it quite appropriate that since I had the whole day off (and a beautiful day it was in the high 50's, sunny and a bit breezy) I would spend it out in the yard cleaning it up to commemorate Earth Day. After filling a dozen or more bags with leaves and pine needles and picking trash out of the bushes, I am quite sore but have a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. I am very thankful that I have a yard to rake since many have lost not only their yards but their homes to the flooding that is going on all around us.

The "Tea Party" Protest

Yesterday, April 15, was designated as the day to have"Tea Party" protests against government spending policies. Since I don't have much interest in politics I didn't know anything about it but Curt had been checking out places that were holding a "tea party". Jamestown hadn't been lised but then we saw an ad in the paper and decided to go join the cause. I felt bad I hadn't planned ahead and made a protest sign but we joined the march from the Buffalo City Grill parking lot to the KC Hall, where the speeches were made. There were only about 50 adults and children in the march but I was proud to be part of it. This country has become great because it was founded on Godly principles. We are "One nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all". But we are turning away from the very principles that made us strong. Now I just need to do something about it and write to my Congressmen about my concerns.

The Flood of 2009

Due to all the snow this winter and a wet fall last year there has been unbelieveable flooding in this area. The newspaper today showed aerial views of farms and roads that are flooded south of town in Adrian, Montpelier, Grand Rapids and LaMoure. The town of Kathryn has evacuated and Valley City may have to also. If the water in the dam goes over the "glory hole" there will be many homes flooded here in Jamestown also and the way it looks it may happen. They continue to fill sandbags in the civic center parking lot and are increasing the dikes and levees around town to try and save as many homes as possible.

I haven't been helping with the sandbagging since the first week-end in April. But the two times I went I felt tired but good about doing it. It has been really great to see everyone working together for a common good.

Even though we are having water seepage in the east end of the basement and I am tired of getting up during the night and all day going down to wet vac, at least I still have my house and my belongings. Many people are losing everything. I pray that this too shall pass very soon!
